Emmanuel College Alum appointed Islington United's Minister of Music

Fred Graham, Emmanuel College MSMus professor emeritus, requested that the following message be shared with the community:

I am the interim music leader at Islington United Church following the retirement of Dr. John Derksen who had a distinguished career there for 23 years. (John was formerly the music professor at Knox College for 28 years). At Islington he developed a full program including a Children’s Choir, a Youth Choir, a Youth Hand-bell Team, and a Senior Choir of superior quality. There are two Sunday morning services. Easter attendance last year was 664.

On February 12, a Presbytery Covenanting service was held for the new minister, Maya Landell, an exceptional graduate of Emmanuel College. Since last September the congregation has been conducting a search for a new musician to follow John. They received 21 applications, and interviewed 5 finalists, all well qualified.

The results of the search were announced at today’s worship. I am delighted and proud to share that beginning May 9, the new Minister of Music will be Jason Locke, an award- winning graduate of the MSMus program. He leaves a highly successful career at Christ Church United in Mississauga. Jim Cairney is very sad, but the folks at IUC are thrilled. The future under Jason’s leadership is an exciting one.

This is a major church and a major appointment, and Emmanuel should be proud of its role in pointing to new ways for the church at worship."
