Emmanuel College is pleased to announce the appointment of Katherine (Kathy) Bullock as the new Coordinator of the Canadian Certificate of Muslim Studies Program. Kathy holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Arts from Queen’s University. She has taught several courses on the politics of Islam at both the University of Toronto and California State University.
Currently, Kathy is President of The Tessellate Institute, a private, not-for-profit, non-partisan research institute committed to disseminating academically rigorous research about policy-relevant issues, particularly on topics pertaining to ethnic and religious minorities. Kathy has also served as Editor for the American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences (2003-2008) and as the Executive Director, Education, Media and Community Outreach, for The Islamic Society of North America – Canada (ISNA,
2003-2005). Kathy also serves as a Canadian facilitator for a worldwide study of Muslim grassroots views on democracy headed by Amedee Turner.
Kathy’s publications include numerous articles and book chapters and two books, Muslim Women Activists in North America: Speaking For Ourselves (University of Texas Press, 2005) and Rethinking Muslim Women and the Veil: Challenging Historical and Modern Stereotypes (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 2002; this book has been translated into Arabic, French and Turkish).
