News Release April 7, 2016
Emmanuel College of Victoria University in the University of Toronto has named Pamela R. McCarroll an associate professor of Practical Theology, effective July 1, 2016. “I have discerned a deep sense of call to the position at Emmanuel. I am absolutely thrilled to be able to offer myself fully to my vocation at Emmanuel College,” says McCarroll, who will be leaving Toronto’s Knox College to join Emmanuel.
McCarroll is currently an associate professor of Pastoral Theology, and director of Field Education at Knox College. She completed a PhD in 2006 at the University of St. Michael’s College, with Harold Wells of Emmanuel College as supervisor. She holds an MDiv from Knox College and a BA in English Literature and Art History from the University of Guelph. She is a full member of the Graduate Centre for Theological Studies within the Toronto School of Theology (TST). McCarroll is a registered psychotherapist in the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, a certified teaching supervisor, a specialist in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and a member of the Canadian Association of Spiritual Care (CASC). She currently serves on the CASC National Research Committee and as the CASC representative on the board of the Journal of Pastoral Care Publications. For two years, McCarroll served as a clinical educator and as adjunct faculty in Spiritual and Religious Care at Sunnybrook Health Services. She also possesses five years of experience as a chaplain with Hamilton Health Sciences.
Since her dissertation work, her research has focussed on themes and issues pertaining to spiritual care and counselling, including spirituality and health, spirituality and dying, the lived experience of hope as well as methodological issues pertaining to the discipline itself. She has published two books based on her research. Her current research attempts to establish the evidence-based practice and research base for the emerging public discipline of spiritual care and counselling. She has extensive teaching experience and has been a driving force in the development of the new “Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy” stream for the Master of Pastoral Studies program within TST. Both Emmanuel College and Knox College are members of TST.
Mark Toulouse, principal of Emmanuel College, says, “Pam McCarroll brings established and impressive credentials in the area of spiritual care and counselling. Her appointment provides immediate and substantial support for the new stream within our existing Master of Pastoral Studies program, beginning in September 2016, that specializes in Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy. The faculty of Emmanuel College is excited to have her on board!”
