Master of Divinity

The Master of Divinity (MDiv) program is intended to equip persons for ordained ministry in The United Church of Canada and other denominations as well as other forms of ministry such as pastoral care, pastoral counselling, careers in the non-profit sector, Christian education and chaplaincy. This program may also lead to advanced degree study and therefore MDiv students have the option of writing a thesis.

Graduates of the MDiv are eligible to be certified with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care as pastoral care providers, community-based pastoral care workers, chaplains and pastoral counsellors.

The MDiv consists of 30 credits and may be completed on a purely part-time basis. Students are allowed up to eight years to complete the degree. It is possible to combine the MDiv program with the MRE, MPS or MTS programs.

MDiv Entrance Tuition Grant

Emmanuel College recognizes that a Master of Divinity degree can be a challenging commitment for potential students who are facing the realities of financing a three-year program. The MDiv Entrance Tuition Grant aims to offset some of those financial costs and enable prospective students to begin the program, have a positive experience and provide the student with more time to make arrangements to finance years two and three. It is our hope this will make preparation for ministry more accessible and encourage incoming students to invest fully in life at Emmanuel College.

Domestic MDiv students who begin in the Fall or Winter Session will receive a tuition grant for a maximum of 10 credits taken within 12 months of their initial registration.

International Students may be eligible for other types of student aid. Students admitted to the MDiv on a conditional basis may still be eligible for a tuition grant at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the MDiv, graduates will:

Religious Faith and Heritage
• Demonstrate knowledge of the Christian heritage, and articulate clearly their own theological positions.
• Interpret scripture and Christian texts using a variety of methods, sources, and norms.
• Identify and respect the diversity of theological viewpoints and practices within the Christian tradition.


Culture and Context
• Demonstrate critical understanding for ordered and lay ministries of the relationship between faith practices and cultural contexts.
• Employ diverse methods of contextual analysis.
